According to the chronicle, its construction began back in 1073 under Prince Svyatoslav Yaroslavich and lasted till 1089. As a legend says, the temple was built by 12 brothers from Greece, sent here by the Mother of God who gave them a miracle-working icon of Dormition. Hence the name of the cathedral.
In 1941 the cathedral was blown up. Till now it is not known whether the Nazi occupants or the Soviet Resistance participants were responsible. For half a century the temple lay in ruins. It was restored only in 2002. To the right of the cathedral is the Refectory Church (1893-1895).
